GI Bill BAH Goes Up 4.2% This August
Starting August 1, 2026, Post-9/11 GI Bill housing allowances (BAH) increase by 4.2% across the board. This is one of the larger annual adjustments in recent years and reflects the ongoing effort to keep GI Bill benefits aligned with actual housing costs.
If you're currently in school or plan to start soon, your monthly housing payment is going up — automatically, with no action required on your part.
What 4.2% Looks Like in Real Numbers
BAH is based on your school's zip code and E-5 with dependent rates. A few examples:
- Fayetteville, NC (Fort Bragg area): ~$1,650 → ~$1,719/month
- San Diego, CA: ~$3,200 → ~$3,334/month
- Charlotte, NC: ~$1,800 → ~$1,876/month
- Austin, TX: ~$2,050 → ~$2,136/month
Regional variation applies — check your specific rate at the VA's GI Bill Comparison Tool.
When You'll See the Increase
- Currently enrolled students: New rate takes effect at the start of the term that begins on or after August 1, 2026. You don't need to do anything — the VA automatically applies updated rates.
- Starting school in fall 2026: Your benefits will use the new higher rate from day one.
- Online-only students: You receive 50% of the BAH rate for the zip code of your school's main campus. The 4.2% increase applies to that rate as well.
How to Verify Your BAH Rate
- Go to va.gov/education/gi-bill-comparison-tool
- Enter your school and enrollment type
- The tool updates to reflect the August 2026 rates before the semester starts
You can also log in to va.gov/mybenefits to view your current payment schedule and verify when the new rate kicks in.
What Else Changed in 2026
Beyond the BAH increase:
- Books and supplies stipend remains at up to $1,000 per academic year ($500/term)
- Tuition coverage continues up to the in-state tuition cap at public schools, with Yellow Ribbon covering the gap at private schools
- Chapter 33 delimiting date remains 15 years from your last discharge — check your remaining entitlement at va.gov
If You're About to Start School
The 4.2% increase may change your school-choice math. If you were borderline on affording housing near a target school, run the numbers again with August 2026 BAH rates before deciding.
Use the comparison tool to stack BAH rates by location — sometimes a school 20 miles away in a higher-cost zip code pays significantly more BAH.
What Hasn't Changed
This increase covers housing allowance only. The following remain the same:
- Tuition coverage rules and caps
- Books and supplies stipend structure
- Transfer of entitlement rules for dependents
- Delimiting date policy
Bottom Line
This is the highest BAH adjustment in several years. If you have GI Bill entitlement remaining and haven't used it, now is a strong time to enroll. The benefit is more valuable in 2026 than it was even 12 months ago.
Check your remaining entitlement at va.gov and run the numbers for your area.
